This course covers the considerations for choosing to use a pesticide as part of an IPM programme. While non-chemical controls should be relied upon as much as possible, pesticides are an integral part of IPM. The course will concentrate on synthetic chemistry rather than bioprotectants.

By completing this training, you will be able to:

    • Understand how chemicals are grouped according to their mode of action of the target organism.
    • Choose a product with the most appropriate type of activity for your circumstances.
    • Recognise the different formulations that pesticides can be sold as and their properties.
    • Recognise the need to vary the types of chemicals used to avoid resistance.
    • Understand mechanisms of resistance and how to recognise it in the field.
    • Apply this knowledge to minimise side effects on non-target organisms.
