This course introduces the key concepts of insect pathology; although it is a basic course, the nature of the material is quite complex.
An understanding of the diseases that affect insects (entomopathogens) helps us to get the best out of bioinsecticides. Knowing what organisms we can be formulated into products, and which occur naturally in pest populations puts this element of biocontrol into perspective.
On completion of this course you will be able to:
- Describe the major micro-organisms causing disease in arthropod populations
- Understand how some pathogens manifest disease in arthropods
- Explain how insects respond to pathogen attack
- Discuss and evaluate the use of insect pathogens in the context of IPM strategies
- Difficulty: Basic
